T. Macdonald, of Springwood, kindly placed his large brick granary at the disposal of the West Plains Quadrille Assembly for the purposes of holding a "Bachelor's Ball at West Plains". Mrs Macdonald wore a becoming black dress.

Thomas MACDONALD was born 10 Jul 1849 at Nenthorn, Berwickshire, Scotland, the son of Donald MACDONALD and Agnes nee DICKSON. Thomas married Richmond Margaret TAYLOR at Waikiwi, Invercargill on 16 Sep 1883. There were four children:

Angus Donald MACDONALD (1886-1965) m 1926 Eva SNELL
James Taylor MACDONALD (1890-1945) m 1921 Freda Wenham WESNEY

Thomas' wife, Richmond Margaret TAYLOR, was born 20 Feb 1856 at Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the daughter of James TAYLOR and Margaret BROWN. In 1907, Allan D. MACDONALD, a brother of Thomas, died at Venice, Italy, aged 52 years. Another relative, Richmond Margaret Englis TAYLOR, relict of James, died 10 Jan 1902 at Makarewa Bush, Southland, aged 84 years.
Thomas MACDONALD died at Invercargill on 23 June 1921 and his wife, Richmond Margaret, died at Gore a few months later on 01 November. Both are buried at Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.
